Team Cotton has made a family pact to get our spiritual, physical, and financial house in order. For starters, we have sworn off processed foods & beverages. The foods you see came from our pantry & refrigerator, and will be discarded momentarily. We are posting the pics for two reasons: 1) To hold ourselves publicly accountable, and 2) To inspire others to make healthier life decisions.

Today makes one week, so we still have a ways to go, but it sure helps that Sean and I are both supporting each other and holding each other accountable. Would be far more difficult to accomplish solo. Thinking about starting my own blog dedicated to documenting our progress & challenges. There's a lot to be said about the planning it takes to maintain a health & diet change. Old habits and rituals that are ingrained in our subcultures don't go away just because we make a public declaration on Facebook (laughing at myself). The first time you have to drive past your favorite take-out spot to go home & cook won't be too bad. But having to drive past that same spot every day for a week without stopping to place a to-go order will be very telling. LOL. You start to rationalize and bargain with your spouse - anything to satisfy cravings. But it shows you just how often you eat out and eat foods that are not healthy for you. All in all (keeping in mind, we're just one week in), this resolve has brought strength to our marriage and has helped us spend more quality time together, and I'm so grateful. We share the cooking, research & shopping for healthy recipes. Before, that was hardly ever the case. It was mainly ME cooking (when I cooked). Also, we make frequent trips to the grocery store for fresh fruit & veggies. The inside of our fridge looks amazingly different now! Very colorful with mostly live foods. And most importantly, even after only one week, we can feel the difference - at least I can, and I'm the one with the most health challenges. I realize that this is a marathon, and not a sprint, so I try to keep that in mind to bring balance to each experience along the way. Thankful for the leadership shown by my husband to get our family healthy. I'm blessed. We are blessed.

![]() I grew up as a lanky kid born in Chicago, and growing up in Meridian, Mississippi. I have the benefit of both Midwestern and Southern roots, and a minority perspective. Those culturally rich perspectives have become the backdrop for me and my identifying with the common person through political and social commentary. Before and after college, I served my country in the Army for ten years. My military career deepened my resolve to stay connected to my country and community through civic involvement. Through writing, I hope to touch those around me and leave my footprint on the world.
